“When I first wrote Father Time, I kept it from everyone because it was so personal that I was too choked up to sing it. I wrote it just after I turned 70 when I was at our then home in Maui. The house was my refuge in the middle of the forest, overlooking the sea – it was pure heaven. The words ‘Father Time is over there watching over my shoulder’ rang in my head, so I picked up my guitar and the rest of the song just flowed. I turned on my iPhone and recorded it. I cried after I wrote it and played it back. It’s probably the most personal song I’ve ever written and now, just 75 years old, I’m finally ready to release it.”

Everything works well here and I like this album (a lot). The Tigers are still very metal at this point but this album has a very welcome bluesy edge that I really enjoy listening to. John Sykes and Rob Weir’s guitar work is still very good, although it doesn’t pack as much punch as before. I can’t say there are any bad solos or riffs on the album. Vocalist John Deverill delivers one of his best performances with the band on this album. And the drums help bring everything together. Overall this is a great album that is actually a favorite album of the band and the entire NWOBHM movement.

This 1997 CD has been reissued by AG Records, featuring three bonus tracks (including the excellent B-side single “Stormlands”), as well as band photos, technical credits and extended biographical information.

Quiet Days: Review: Crazy Dancing Days By Keith Christmas

One of the most overlooked and criminally underrated NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) bands of all time. Crazy Nights was the third outing for the Tigers and the second with ‘new’ singer John Deverill and guitarist John Sykes (later seen in Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy etc.) Crazy Nights departs slightly from the more ‘polished’ effect of Spellbound. And the Tygers add a rawer feel to the music. It was originally released in 1982 and still sounds as fresh today as it did then.

Hailing from tiny Whitley Bay in north-east England, Tigers of Pan Tang (named after Michael Moorcock’s novel Stormbringer) formed when aspiring singer Jess Cox met guitarist Rob Weir in a local pub in November 1978. With bassist Rocky and drummer Brian Dick, the band recently formed a band that combined the lessons of heavy metal legends such as Black Sabbath and Deep Purple with the do-it-yourself ethos of punk – an emerging genre that was eventually dubbed new wave. British heavy metal. After a lot of practice and fun around the area, the foursome recorded some demos at Impulse Studios, whose owners Neat Records made their debut.
